How this issue affects you
After updating your browser or adding a new extension, a screen appears on your browser informing you that Browser Guard has reached its rule limit. This screen explains why Browser Guard has reached the rule limit and asks you to choose which Browser Guard features you'd like to use.
What caused this issue
Google Chrome updated its platform for browser extensions to a new version called Manifest V3. Manifest V3 limits the number of rules that each browser extension you have can use. Instead of having unlimited rules, your extensions will now need to compete for a set amount of rules. One single extension may use up all available rules, limiting what your other extensions can do. Browser Guard will continue to work as normal unless it reaches a browser's rule limit. This change affects Chrome, Edge, and Firefox browsers. It does not affect Safari browsers at this time.
How to resolve this issue
If Browser Guard has reached the rule limit, choose one of the options below to allow Browser Guard to have more rules so you can remain protected.
Make sure you're using the latest version of Browser Guard. You can get the latest versions for your browser type here:
Option 1
Review your current browser extensions. Remove any extensions you don't use anymore or that you don't need. This will help give Browser Guard more rules so that it won't reach the rule limit. The more extensions you have, the more likely it is that Browser Guard will reach the browser's rule limit.
Option 2
Choose which Browser Guard features are most useful to you when online. In the message that appears once you reach the rule limit, decide which feature is more important for what you're doing. By choosing which feature to focus on, you are allowing Browser Guard to reduce the number of rules it's using.
The feature options are:
- Block ads and trackers
- Block Malicious Websites
If you want to change your choice later, you will need to close and relaunch the browser. You may not see the message again as it will only show if you have reached the rule limit.
