In the app, you can customize your protection through settings. This means you can choose how the app interacts with your device to get the best possible experience. Read on to learn more about general settings for the app on your macOS device.
To view settings:
- Open the app.
- Click on Settings in the sidebar.
- Click General.
On the General tab, you can configure the following settings:

Potentially unwanted programs (PUPs): This setting determines the app's action when it detects a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) on your device. You can choose from the following options:
- Quarantine (recommended): This setting automatically quarantines a PUP when detected and is the default setting. Click here to learn more about quarantining.
- Skip: We do not recommend turning on this setting; it excludes all PUPs from automatically being quarantined when they are detected.
- Quarantine: Enable this setting to auto-delete quarantined items after the selected time period.

Application updates
- Automatically update to a new version of Malwarebytes: Make sure to enable this setting to receive the newest features and bug fixes. Your device must have an active internet connection to update the app.
- Automatically check for protection updates: By default, the app checks for updates hourly. You can schedule the app to check for updates more or less frequently.
- Beta application updates: For early access to the latest software and security features, turn on this setting, then click Enable Beta. Whenever there is a new beta release, the app will automatically update.
- Usage and threat statistics: Enable this setting to allow the app to send anonymized data to our research team.
