If the Malwarebytes Endpoint Agent is installed on Windows Server 2008, it may fail to register with the Malwarebytes cloud platform.

When the Malwarebytes Endpoint Agent fails to register, the following error appears in the logs:

The client and server cannot communicate, because they do not possess a common algorithm.

Cause

The Malwarebytes Endpoint Agent requires TLS 1.1 and 1.2 to communicate with the Malwarebytes cloud platform.

Windows Server 2008 does not support TLS 1.1 or 1.2 unless R2 Service Pack 1 is installed plus TLS has been enabled, as Microsoft do not enable it by default.

Resolution

Install Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1, then enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2 on the server.

For instructions, see Microsoft's article Update to add support for TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 in Windows....

Helper Script

A Windows command script is attached, with registry setting commands as an example, to help with configuration.
