If you attempt to back up the Malwarebytes Management Console using the Data Backup and Restoration tool, you may see the message:

The VSS system writer is missing.

The Data Backup and Restoration tool uses Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), which consists of several System Writers designed to assist with backups.  If System Writers are missing, the Data Backup and Restoration tool creates temporary ASP.NET files, causing the System Writer to appear missing.

To restore VSS on Windows Server 2008, refer to Microsoft's article System Writer is missing, and backups fail in Windows Server 2008.

For other Windows Server operating systems, delete the following folders:

  • C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\
  • C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files\
  • C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\
  • C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files\

To see more information on this issue for Windows Server 2008, see Event ID 513 — Shadow Copy System Writer Functionality.
