Malwarebytes Clean Uninstall Tool (MB-Clean)


Sometimes we run into problems with the software that are caused by corruption or leftover items associated with Malwarebytes software. This can be remedied by using the official Malwarebytes Clean Uninstall tool called MB-Clean. More information and how to use this tool are addressed in this article.

 What is MB-Clean?

MB-Clean (aka Malwarebytes Cleanup Utility) is a standalone tool developed by Malwarebytes to assist in fully removing the following products:  

  • All versions of Malwarebytes 3.x
    • MB-Clean provides functionality to backup the MB3 license ID/Key and automate both reinstallation and reactivation of MB3 Premium.
  • All versions of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.x 
  • All versions of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.x
  • All versions of Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit 1.x
  • All versions of Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware 0.x

 When to use MB-Clean?

  • If you are having trouble uninstalling any of the supported products mentioned above.
  • If you are having trouble upgrading to a newer version.
  • If you are getting access denied or failed to delete errors during removal.
  • If real-time protection is having trouble starting.


 What Operating Systems can I use MB-Clean on?

  • Windows 10 (32/64-bit)
  • Windows 8.1 (32/64-bit)
  • Windows 8 (32/64-bit)
  • Windows 7 (32/64-bit)
  • Windows Vista (Service Pack 1 or later, 32/64-bit)
  • Windows XP (Service Pack 3 or later, 32-bit only)


 What do I need to know before running MB-Clean?

  • It does not clean Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Mobile.
  • The MB-Clean executable can be saved to and run from any path (e.g. Downloads folder, Desktop, temporary Internet Files folder, etc.).
  • MB-Clean can run from an Administrator or Standard/Limited User account.
  • MB-Clean can run in both Normal and Safe Mode (with Networking).
  • Double-click the MB-Clean executable to run.
  • Execution on systems with User Account Control (UAC) enabled will generated a UAC prompt.
  • User interaction is required.


 What are the steps to use MB-Clean?

  1. Download the latest version using the following link: Download MB-Clean
  2. Close all open applications.
  3. If applicable, backup your license key and deactivate the product.
  4. Double-click mb-clean-x.x.x.xxxx.exe to run the tool (x refers to the tool version).
  5. A prompt to confirm the cleanup and agree to the Malwarebytes EULA will appear. Select Yes or No.

    • Yes - will proceed with the cleanup process
    • No - will exit the utility
  6. Once completed, a log file (mb-clean-results.txt) will be saved tot the Desktop.
  7. You will be prompted to reboot. We recommend an immediate reboot by clicking Yes.

    Warning: Suppressing the reboot may result in an incomplete cleanup.
  8. Upon reboot, your machine will be free of the supported products mentioned above and ready for installation of Malwarebytes 3.
  9. When prompted to install Malwarebytes 3, click Yes.
  10. A progress bar will appear. Installation of Malwarebytes 3 will begin after.
  11. Malwarebytes will be installed to the default installation directory (%programfiles%\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware).
  12. Upon completion, the following message box will be displayed. Click OK to finish.

    Note: If you are working with a support agent, please provide the generated mb-clean-results.txt found on the Desktop.
  13. Malwarebytes will now open to the Dashboard.
  14. If you had Malwarebytes Premium activated prior to running MB-Clean, verify Premium is now active.
